Lesson Plans for MLs from the
Federal Trade Commission

The toolbox on the FTC website contains lesson plans prepared by the Center for Applied Linguistics on the topics of “Managing Your Money”, “Credit, Loans, and Debt”, and “Scams and Identity Theft”. The last of the Identity Theft lessons is Scams Against Immigrants. It includes detailed instructions about how to adapt the lesson to the MLs you are teaching and the objectives and standards met by the lesson. It also has a complete vocabulary list and a list of which handouts should be used for beginning or intermediate students. There is a presentation with extensive notes that you can download and adapt for your own use. The handouts contain answer keys, and free copies in quantities of 50-200 can be ordered from the website.

Here is the schedule; you do not have to attend every session.

FTC Advice and Resources for
Parents of MLs

Along with consumer advice about Managing Your Money, Credit, Loans and Debt, and Scams and Identity Theft, the FTC website also contains essential information to help immigrants protect themselves from scams. The advice is available in twelve languages.

The site lists the types of scams and guides immigrants about how to recognize them and find the help they need. There is a list of those who might help them and what kind of help they can receive from lawyers and from family or friends. There is a warning that Spanish speakers might be confused by the term notarios, which in Spanish is a highly qualified lawyer, but in the U.S. is only a notary public. Included is a document that can be used to check if lawyers and service organizations are authorized for immigration assistance by the FTC. Also on this page is a free graphic novel in English and Spanish and can be ordered for distribution. In addition, there is a fraud handbook in 14 languages that provides refugees and immigrants with basic information about how to recognize a scam and how to protect personal information. Finally, there is advice on how to report a scam.
