Professional Development Opportunities in 2025

Hello to our NJTESOL/NJBE Members,

2025 is right around the corner and NJTESOL/NJBE is ready to provide you all with many opportunities for professional and personal growth.

First, let’s look at our Executive Board Committee meetings and presentations.

The Advocacy Committee meets on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 5:00. Our next meeting will be January 16th. Join us for discussions on issues that impact Multilingual Learners and their families in New Jersey. Register using the Google form to get a Zoom link.

The Countering Anti-Black Racism Committee invites all members of NJTESOL/NJBE to attend our Countering Anti-Black Racism (CABR) Committee Meeting on Wednesday, January 15, from 7:00-8:30 pm. We will meet on the 3rd Wednesday of every month through June.

This month we will continue unpacking anti-Blackness in Latinidad including the implications for Hispanic Heritage Month. We will then discuss what this means for our actionable work on this committee, in this organization, as educators, and as advocates. Sign up at Eventbrite

The Professional Development Committee has been presenting information on MLs and literacy. Join us virtually for our third PLC meeting on February 3rd at 5:00 pm for an overview of the Science of Reading/Structured Literacy and what it means for MLs in New Jersey. This PLC series will be helpful for any stakeholders who are interested in learning how to help MLs of any age crack the code of reading in English. Register here

The Parent Expo Committee will be holding its fifth Virtual Parent Expo on Saturday, January 25, 2025, from 9:30 – 12:00. There will be presentations for multilingual parents and families; please encourage your students’ families to attend. More information is below in English/Spanish/Haitian Creole; feel free to share widely. Registration is on Eventbrite

  • Parents of multilingual students join us for the FREE virtual Padres con Poder/Parent Power, NJTESOL/NJBE workshop on Saturday, January 25 from 9:30-12:30! There will be live presentations and an online library of resources available to participants. Topics will focus on applying for financial aid and college preparation, free health insurance programs for children, attendance issues, parent advocacy at school, and a presentation by Seal of Biliteracy graduates. Recordings of the presentations will be available in our resources.

There will be a raffle for two $25 Target gift cards. Attendance certificates will also be offered to parents so that teachers can offer extra credit to students whose parents participate! Here is the registration link.

Habrá presentaciones en vivo y una biblioteca en línea de recursos disponibles para los participantes. Las presentaciones de este año se centran en la solicitud de ayuda financiera y la preparación universitaria, programas de seguro médico gratuitos para niños, problemas de asistencia, defensa de los padres en la escuela y una presentación de los graduados del Sello de Bilingüe. Las grabaciones de las presentaciones estarán disponibles en nuestros recursos.

Our chapters have been meeting in person and virtually. Here are some virtual meetings scheduled for the new year.

Somerset – Hunterdon Chapter Meeting: January 15, 2025 from 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm
Maggie Churchill will be joining us to talk about the WIDA Standards framework. The session will be in a discussion/Q&A format. Please come with questions for Maggie! Register on Eventbrite.

Passaic County Chapter Meeting: January 23, 2025, from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Melanie DeDios will present on Canva for Educators. Register on Eventbrite.

Bergen County Chapter Meeting: February 5, 2025 from 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm
The meeting will feature NJTESOL/NJBE’s WIDA rep, Maggie Churchill. She will present on how to implement the 2020 WIDA Standards into an ESL Curriculum.   Register here.

Finally, our NJTESOL/NJBE’s Spring Conference will explore how intersectionality shapes experiences and creates opportunities for students, their families, educators, support staff, and the communities in which we work and live. We will have many outstanding presentations and speakers.
